750 children belonging to extremely poor families living
in Parintins (Amazon forest) in the quarters Ita 1 and Ita 2 are daily assisted due to
their extreme living conditions: out of them, 90 children are underfed: a very high rate(12%)
compared with the average of the Country.
The "distance adoption" program activated by the Butterfly Foundation in close cooperation
with the local diocese, the pastoral de Criança and the social services of the "Padre Colombo"
hospital of Parintins is aiming to secure these children the possibility to live a normal life
and to attend a kindergarten. A food aid program has been in the meantime implemented as well
to stabilize the living conditions of these children.
