MANEWOT WATER WELL

On June 28th 2009,  Butterfly foundation, thanks to the funding made available by the ASSOCIAZIONE VOLONTARI  L’ACCOGLIENZA, based in Rocca Canavese and headed by Don Sergio Messina, officially opened a new  well of potable water in MANEWOT (Adiliado area) in the woreda Sasietsaedaemba, approx. 45 kilometres far from the city of Adigrat,  Tigray region, Ethiopia.
The well, has been drilled at a depth of 40 metres and  guarantees  a regular supply of potable water to approx. 1.500 people, including 350 students of a nearby school.

The area of Adiliado, where the well has been drilled,  is an extremely dry zone .
Tigray region in located in the North of the Country and covers a surface of 61.500 sq. kilometers. i.e. the 5,6% of the total population of Ethiopia. People living in Tigray are five million and the 85% of them is represented by rural population with a growth index of 3% .
In Ethiopia only the 22% of the population has access to clean water sources, but in these rural areas such a percentage lowers down to 11% ; four over one hundred people have access to sufficient sanitary conditions.

The technical realization of this project has been entrusted to ACS ( Adigrad Catholic Secretariat), an organization working since many years in Tigray region and equipped with machineries and technical personnel in condition to provide technical execution and maintenance of the works.
The project coordination has been secured by VIS( Volontariato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo) regional office in Ethiopia which is Butterfly foundation partner in Ethiopia.
