A “cultural integration” program for children and foreign families,
with particular attention to the Ecuadorian community present in Genoa.
Thanks to the support from Western Union FSI, The Butterfly Onlus Foundation has contributed to the development of the following Modules in the Genoa City Hall, in favour of and in order to support foreign communities resident in Genoa, particularly of Ecuadorian origin..
Module 1 – Workshops in middle schools of the area
The workshops are devised for the schools of the area and are mostly targeted at middle schools, where there are more difficulties regarding integration, and the risk of foreign students being dispersed within the schools is more evident.
The workshops are made up of 6 to 8 meetings which last two hours each and are scheduled throughout the school year, and are held by two educators simultaneously. 10 to 12 classes are involved in the project, with a total of approximately 300 students.
- Theatre Workshop:
Theatre technique is used in order to learn and understand the Italian language more easily: the use of theatrical technique often gives students who have difficulties at school the chance to be able to express new potential.
- Meetings for educational and professional vocational guidance and career advice:
In some classes there is the possibility for educational and professional vocational guidance and career advisory courses held within specific guided tours.
- Language and Alphabetization workshop:
The objective is to bring kids closer to having a positive approach to computers through the use of main computer programs for video, writing, design and calculation.
Module 2 – Activation of a decentralized desk for the Ecuadorian Association For Solidarity
An information desk has been activated within the “Family Space” section of the Genoa City Hall.
The desk is called “El arte del encuentro” and is open 41 hours a week. Between 450 and 600 Ecuadorian citizens can make use of this service directly.
Initiatives foreseen by the modules:
- Cultural/recreational activities: The scheduling of an annual calendar of events which includes: solidarity initiatives; trips; cultural trips; themed meetings in order to promote mutual aid between families, to create groups which help each other consistently, and in order to favour cultural exchanges and consolidate the presence of the Ecuadorian Association in the area
- Citizen events: organisation of some events for citizens such as video projections and/or photographic exhibitions in order to recuperate the memory of the country of origin, especially for those children who were born in Italy or kids who have left their country for some time.
- Computer Alphabetization and access to the internet: the organisation of workshops in order to become familiar with computer technology and the activation of an “internet point”, within the “Family Space”, open to everyone and intended to facilitate communication between residents and their communities of origin.
