Center for the Disabled and Orphans of Payaphyu
Myanmar, Taunggyi |
|
The Center of Payaphyu is in Taunggyi,
the capital of the state of Shan, in Myanmar (formerly Burma). It
was founded more than thirty years ago by Fratel Felice Tantardini
of PIME. It is currently part of the diocese of Taunggyi, and is run
by eight nuns of Maria Bambina.
The structure houses today,174 patients with differing pathologies.
There are patients afflicted by mental diseases (schizophrenia, senile
dementia, psychiatric pathologies), as well as people with physical
disease and deformations (blind patients, deaf-mutes, persons with
epilepsy, polio, and crippling deformations). Given the scarcity of
economic means and available beds, it is necessary to house these
different types of patients together. In addition to diseases there
are also numerous orphans, abandoned on the doorstep of the church
or in front of the doors to the Center by families unable or unwilling
to keep them, but who know that the nuns will do whatever possible
to take care of them.
IThe Center is completely without an infirmary and personnel with
basic medical knowledge. There is no medication of any type, not even
the most essential, which could decisively improve the quality of
life of the most serious patients, and alleviate their suffering.
There is also insufficient space and equipment, and insufficient specific
knowledge to perform physical therapy and rehabilitation.
The nuns are presently attending training courses and the Butterfly
Foundation, together with the association New Humanity-Focsiv is presently
engaged to financially support the realization of a new building to
be used for rehabilitation therapies of polio affected small patients
and of general infrastructure works.
The construction of a new structure to shelter the epileptic patients,
a new canteen and adequate sanitary facilities has been recently completed
thanks to the support of a few sponsors (see Saclà
S.p.a.).
In addition to these ‘extraordinary’ initiatives, financing
is also needed for the regular management of the Center, and to guarantee
a dignified life to all of the patients, from the oldest to the youngest
and the most needy. |
