The project provides for the full-service realization of a teaching and computer lab unit solar-powered, which could serve as a repeatable model in the region, with the view to improve the level of education in rural primary and middle grade schools.

Most of the rural schools in the region of Tigray, in Ethiopia, don’t have access to electric energy, water, lavatories, furniture and school supplies such as pens, exercise books and texts, the fundamental and necessary tools in the educational process. It’s not uncommon to see teachers giving lessons open air, or among stone walls with children sitting on the floor.
The use of renewable energies can have a remarkable development and play a decisive role in rural schools of the region, totally lacking of electric energy.
Most of the children attending the lessons in rural schools with no computers, internet, printers, copiers, and teachers forced to use slates to teach, definitely face great problems to handle learning and teaching processes.
The project foresees the turn key realization of a teaching and computer lab unit solar-powered, with the aim to improve the level of education in rural primary and middle grade schools.
We have identified in the elementary and primary school of Kafna, Tigray Region, completely implemented by Butterfly foundation and presently sheltering over 900 children from the first to the third grade, the first rural school that could benefit from this project.
Thanks to the use of the solar power, there will be certainly a significant increase of the educational quality in the rural Ethiopian schools, which finally could be fitted with a minimum of modern educational equipment.
Each 646 sq. ft. one floor building will be equipped with:
- 10 locations with Toshiba Core i3 laptops – Ram: 4GB – Hard disk: 500GB – Monitor: 15,6”
- 10 desks for students
- 1 copy machine
- 1 printer
- 1 tv screen of 42”
- 1 satellite disk
- 1 solar generator of 4000W with the following technical characteristics: True sine wave 4000W inverter (8000W surge); panel measures: 960 W (4x240W); gel battery: 12V, 440Ah (4 X 110Ah)
- 15 plug outlets for workshop and school
- A training program will be also provided for teachers.
These workshop units could become a replicable standard model in rural schools of the region, and contribute without any doubt to the improvement of the current educational level for elementary and primary grade schools in the area. The cost of construction, furniture and foreseen equipment, including charges, is equal to euro 41.435,00.
