Centre de Santé ‘Salerno’

Antonella Rizzo Salerno decided to finance and dedicate to the memory of her uncles Giovanni and Raffaella a maternity healthcare facility in Nosy Be, Madagascar.

The clinic construction completed thanks to long-lasting cooperation established between the Butterfly foundation and  Manina Consiglio, will guarantee the required medical care and assistance to women in labour. A delivery room, a large hospitalization room to test patients’ health conditions before and after delivery, toilets and a waiting area, as all required fittings and furniture for the distribution of drugs and medicines and an ophthalmic centre for therapy the cataract complete the project.

The Centre de Santè Salerno covers the needs of approx. 25.000 consumers living in the villages of Honko, Ampobilava, and Soulang employ a doctor, a midwife, and a nurse, with a treatment capacity of 60 patients per day.

This project is significant in a country where women risk dying during delivery due to insecure sanitary conditions in their homes and a lack of adequate medicines in emergencies.

According to a recent UNICEF report, approximately eight women, mostly young girls, die daily in Madagascar following pregnancy or deliveries.
