On 28th June 2009, once again thanks to the financial support of the Volontari L’Accoglienza Association (Province of Turin), a well for drinking water was unveiled in MANEWOT (ADILIADO) in the woreda of Sasietsaedaemba, 45km southwest of the centre of Adigrat, Tigray Region.
The well is operated by a hand pump and is 40 metres deep. It will provide clean drinking water to over 1500 people, 350 of whom are pupils of a nearby school.
The area is particularly barren and difficult to access, where the population live on subsistence farming. There is a widespread intestinal infection, which especially affects children and is mainly caused by domestic use of water from unsafe sources (in particular stagnant water).”
