As part of the “Donate the Water” scheme, which has been made possible through the partnership established among Butterfly Charity Foundation and ADCS, (Catholic Association of Adigrat), several projects water-related, are presently under progress in the Tigray region, North of the country at the border with Eritrea. The above, following the recent severe drought, the worst during the last 60 years.


Ethiopia is the biggest and most populated country in the Horn of Africa with a surface area of 1,098,000 km2 and a population of over 90 million people. The country is one of the poorest in Africa and in the world.
The Tigray region is located in the north of Ethiopia and has a surface area of around 61,500 km2, which is equal to 5.6% of the country’s total surface area. There are about 5 million people living in Tigray, 85% of which represents rural populations. The woreda of Irob, where the well has been drilled, is located 150 km. north of the city of Makalle and extends over an expanse of land of about 850 km2 in a very steep area, consisting mainly of mountains and valleys.
The project is located in the village of AWADE, district of Endamosa, in IROB woreda. The well, drilled at a depth of 60 meters, has been equipped with a hand pump for easy maintenance purposes. Fencing, to protect the well from misuse and to regulate access to the same, has equally been erected and a Water & Sanitation committee duly established in accordance with the common practice, in order to guarantee due maintenance and operation of the well.
The AWADE water well implementation has been funded by SANUSLIFE INTERNATIONAL Srl./GmbH company, based in Bolzano (Italy) in the frame of the SANUS-CHARITY-POOL intending to promote water-related projects in favour of people seeking water. Beneficiaries of such a water well are in the range of 600 people including approx 165 students foreseen to double during next year.
The well has been opened on April 29th 2017 within a secondary school compound.
